The total number of cases in the country now stands at 2.9 million.
With the latest spike, the total cases stand at 28,36,926 which is inclusive of 6,86,395 active cases while 977 deaths due to COVID-19 were reported in the last 24 hours in India taking the number of deaths to 53,866, it added.
India now accounts for 10.59% of all active cases globally (one in every 9 active cases), and 6.81% of all deaths (one in every 15).
At the same time India logged the highest single day recoveries as 62,282 were discharged in the last 24 hours taking total recoveries to almost 21.59 lakhs. "With a higher number of Covid-19 patients recovering and being discharged from hospitals and home isolation, the recovery rate has reached 74.69 per cent".
Deaths in the same period jumped by 983, with the total now at 54,849.
Meanwhile, the number of daily coronavirus cases in Delhi have come down since hitting a peak on June 23.

Cases have plateaued in Mumbai, which now averages 1,000 a day and has recorded more than 120,000 in total, but strict government regulations have meant that the festival season, which begins this month, has been lacklustre.
