Since early August, India has been reporting the highest daily increases in cases in the world.
The death toll of 71,642 in India compares with almost 193,000 in the United States and 126,000 in Brazil. 5,773 new COVID infections were reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, taking active cases toll to 97,001.
"As the disease accelerates in rural areas, we risk causing mayhem there", warns Dr Yogesh Jain, a public health expert from Chhattisgarh state.
More than 200 United Nations staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 in Syria, the organization has said. "The cases are predominantly among younger people, but we've seen in other countries across the world and in Europe this sort of rise in cases amongst younger people leading to a rise across the population as a whole".
Meanwhile, the Congress accused the central government of failing to control the spread of the virus and demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi answer the nation on the way forward. It is aiming for one million tests a day. India has been testing more than 10 million people per day on average, with plans to ramp it up further.
Economy added 246,000 jobs in August, unemployment rate 10.2 per cent
According to the survey, the number of people who wanted to work but did not look for a job indicated a "little change" in August. The national jobless rate is now 10.2 per cent, down 0.7 percentage points from the month prior.
Tam says most Canadians are following public health advice and that has allowed Canada to keep the COVID-19 pandemic "under manageable control" but says she is concerned about the uptick in positive cases.
The total case tally stands at 42,04,614 including 8,82,542 active cases, 32,50,429 cured/discharged/migrated & 71,642 deaths, as per the latest Ministry of Health data.
"The number of new cases is increasing at least by 1,000 a day and it is practically impossible to trace contacts of the infected person".
On the global front, India now rallies behind the United States which has recorded 6,275,614 cases and 188,932 deaths so far. Cases in India have grown from 1 million to 4 million in 50 days.
"While testing rates have increased by 240 percent since the beginning of July, Covid positive cases have increased by nearly 325 percent". Metro Rail services were resumed on Monday in several cities, including Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, in a graded manner after over five months of suspension.
