The COVID-19 caseload mounted to 70,53,806 with 74,383 infections being reported in a day, while the death toll climbed to 1,08,334 with 918 people succumbing to the disease in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 AM showed. The five top states -Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu -with the maximum COVID-19 caseload (61 per cent of the active cases) are also contributing more than half (54.3 per cent) of the total recoveries, the ministry said. "Maharashtra leads the tally with more than 26,000 new cases of recovered patients", the health ministry statement further said. India has third-highest death toll and second-highest infections. However, the number of active cases has again registered a decline, which has come down to 8.65 lakh.
The number of active Covid-19 cases in the country continued to fall further and now there are only 8,61,853 active cases, from close to 10.5 lakh almost a month ago.
India has become the second country globally having 7 million cases after the US. With the registration of 11,416 new cases of infection in Maharashtra, the most affected by the corona epidemic, the number of infections has risen to 15,17,434. The death rate fell to 1.54%.
