The decision came on the heels of the Federal Bureau of Investigation foiling a plot to kidnap Michigan Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer - a plot for which she later called out the president for being "complicit" by "giving comfort to those who spread fear and hatred and division".
Those forces include, but are not limited to, the President of the United States.
"I know this isn't unique to MI, but this is uniquely American in this moment and it's on all of us, people of goodwill on both sides of the aisle, to take it on", Whitmer, a Democrat, told the Associated Press.
Whitmer's speech had the expected impact. "Nobody has dared stick their head out".
In this April 30, 2020 file photo, protesters rally to denounce Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's stay-home order and business restrictions due to COVID-19, at the state Capitol in Lansing, Mich.
Nessel said she concurs with that assessment and contends racist militia groups now operating across the country are taking advantage of the unrest that's been caused by the COVID-19 epidemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.
Whitmer, who was considered as Joe Biden's running mate and is almost halfway through a four-year term, has been widely praised for her response to the virus outbreak but also sharply criticized by Republican lawmakers and people in conservative areas of the state. She quoted President Ronald Reagan's 1981 address to the NAACP in which he condemned Americans "who still hold perverted notions about what America is all about". "This is a group of people that are acting on bigotry and prejudice and acting with violence with intent to harm their fellow Americans".
"With much regret I must announce that the Trump Campaign changed venues within the last hour", read the Facebook post on Huron Valley Guns. "At times, she and her family had been moved around as a result of activities that law enforcement was aware of".
Fighting back has been good politics for the governor. A majority in MI approve of her performance, a measure that has increased steadily with her handling of the pandemic.
President Donald Trump's son Eric is set to hit the campaign trail for his father in the Midwest on Tuesday, including the key battleground state of MI.
Trump won MI by less than 1 percentage point in 2016. The state's unemployment rate fell to 8.7 per cent in August from more than 10 per cent in June. In 2016, Democrat Hillary Clinton carried the county, an upscale suburb neighboring Detroit to the northwest.
According to prosecutors, the militia group planned a violent attack on Michigan's government and sought to incite a civil war this summer, with plans to kidnap elected officials.
The video was first shared on social media by Robby Starbuck.
Eric Trump will no longer visit a gun store that used to employ a man now accused of plotting the kidnapping of the governor of MI, the gun store's owner said.
If there had been a more urgent threat against legislators, Johnson said they likely would have been informed. He was referring, of course, to Whitmer's emergency orders.
The account in question above, that of one John Oberlin, is not a verified Twitter account.
"Rather than say thank you, she calls me a White Supremacist-while Biden and Democrats refuse to condemn Antifa, Anarchists, Looters and Mobs that burn down Democrat run cities..." White nationalism also was a strong influence, he said.
