Sullivan served in the Obama administration as national security adviser to then-Vice President Biden before serving as director of policy planning at the State Department and as deputy chief of staff to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
President-elect Joe Biden is expected to nominate Jake Sullivan as his national security adviser and Linda Thomas-Greenfield as USA ambassador to the United Nations, multiple sources familiar with the plans told NBC News.
Biden also announced plans to nominate Alejandro Mayorkas as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and Antony Blinken as his secretary of state.
Senators Chris Coos and Chris Murphy, former first undersecretary of state and ambassador to Russia William Burns and former Obama national security adviser Susan Rice are named as other candidates.

During the campaign, Biden severely criticised Trump's go-it-alone foreign policy and pledged to recommit to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and other global pacts, while promising to draw on experts to fight the COVID crisis and other problems at home. President Trump, in his first year in the White House, pledged to pull the USA out of the global agreement, and that move was finalized earlier this month.
"North Korea will be an important issue, and I expect the Biden national security team, including Tony Blinken, to pursue a deliberate, detailed, diplomatic process to shore up worldwide support from China and others, and to engage Kim Jong-un with an ROK-US united front", he said by email, referring to South Korea by its official name, the Republic of Korea.
Many diplomats have chosen to retire or leave the foreign service given limited prospects for advancements under an administration that they believe does not value their expertise.
Blinken was involved in the U.S. diplomatic efforts ahead of the Paris summit, meeting French foreign minister and president of the Cop21 climate talks Laurent Fabius and China's then foreign minister Wang Yi.
