The rumours were correct about the M1 being built on a 5nm node, which is a smaller node than AMD's 7nm chips and Intel's 10nm and 14nm chips. The one in the M1 has 16 billion transistors; by comparison, AMD's Zen 2 7nm architecture has 3.9 billion, and Tiger Lake has 5 billion. "When it comes to low-power silicon, M1 has the world's fastest CPU core, the world's fastest integrated graphics in a personal computer, and the awesome machine learning performance of the Apple Neural Engine", claimed Srouji.
The M1 chip will power new Macs come with longer battery life, wake up instantly from sleep mode and run all iOS apps. For now, there are Mac devices with Intel and Apple Silicon for the consumers to choose from.
The new 13-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1299 ($1199 for Education), comes in Space Gray and Silver, and is already available for pre-order.
The latest design also features dedicated keys for Apple's Do Not Disturb, Dictation and Spotlight features (replacing the Launchpad and keyboard brightness keys that used to be found in this row of function keys).
"We promised that the first Mac with Apple Silicon will arrive by the end of this year - well, that day is here", Apple CEO Tim Cook said during the unveiling on Tuesday.

With M1 and Big Sur, Mac mini represents a massive shift in what an ultrasmall desktop can do. It will go on sale on November 17.

However, as a report from 9to5Mac pointed out earlier, Apple appeared to be allowing developers to opt out of its new unified app store.
The last big M1 change we'll cover today is also one of the more fascinating. "It builds on more than a decade of designing industry-leading chips for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and ushers in a whole new era for the Mac".
With Big Sur and M1, Mac users can run a greater range of apps than ever before.
The most popular version of the Apple MacBook, the 13-inch MacBook Air, will be 3.5x faster than the previous generation, with support for Wi-Fi 6 and better connectivity. Apple is officially moving on from Intel CPUs for macOS, starting with the 2020 MacBook Air. Machine Learning workloads will run up to 9x faster, so apps that use features like face recognition or object detection can now work more efficiently.
