These new chips designed by Apple - called the M1- will allow app developers to create families of apps that work on both computers and phones.
According to Apple the new Mac Mini is up to eight times faster than the 2018 version thanks to the shiny new 8-core M1 silicon chipset.
That's because they'll need to be "translated" to run on devices with Apple's new chips. Apple claims that M1 processor can deliver peak performance offered by Intel's 11th gen processor at just 1/4th of the power. It includes an advanced thermal design to sustain performance while staying silent and cool. There's also an updated 13-inch MacBook Pro as well as an all-new Mac Mini with M1 Apple Silicon chip. The company expects it will take another two years before all its Macs are running on the in-house chips. So let's focus on some of the benefits Apple says M1 will bring to these new devices if you happen to shell out the cash for one of them.
While Tuesday's event may seem a bit overshadowed by Apple's big 5G iPhone announcement last month, some analysts have noted that it's a big step forward for Apple to have more control over its own hardware.
"We think a similar trend is playing out in the future of the data centre as well". The new Mac Mini brings up to 3x faster CPU performance, and up to 6x better graphics.
Apple's phone chips draw on computing architecture technology from UK-based Arm Ltd, manufactured by outside partners such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. The laptop has a silent, fanless design, and it's supposedly faster than 98 per cent of PC laptops sold in the a year ago, according to the company. Intel helped Apple catch up to Windows computers, some of which were more powerful at the time.
That's because it's up to developers to ensure that their existing Mac software is compatible with the new Apple silicon.
You can pre-order both variants of the MacBook Air with M1 right now from the Apple Store in the United Kingdom and the USA, with orders shipping on an unspecified date next week. When it comes to battery life it is apparently double the previous generation with up to 20 hours video playback.
The partnership between Apple and Intel started in 2005, when the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs outlined a move away from PowerPC processors.
Here in Australia the Mac Mini starts at $1,099 and will be available on November 17.
Even if a vaccine eases the threat posed by the novel coronavirus, people still are expected to be working more frequently from home than they previously did.
Apple has less than 10 per cent of the market for personal computers, so the direct impact on Intel sales may be limited.
