According to preliminary reports from police in Quebec City, they are searching for a man dressed in medieval clothing and armed with a bladed weapon after he attacked multiple people.

He said police are investigating 25 different crime scenes, including the suspect's vehicle found parked in the area where the attacks occurred.

The police advised residents to avoid the Parliament Hill neighborhood and to lock themselves inside as they searched for the attacker.

The five people who were injured during the attack have been transported to hospital with various injuries, Quebec Police confirmed on Sunday morning. Police have formally identified the suspect but have yet to release his identity to the public.

Both victims were residents of Quebec City, police said.

The suspect was hospitalized after being taken into custody, police say.

Police tweeted that there was no immediate indication "that the suspect may have acted for motives other than personal ones".

The attack on took place on Saturday near the Chateau Frontenac, on rue des Ramparts, CBC News quoted Quebec City police spokesperson Etienne Doyon as saying early Sunday morning.

A K-9 unit police officer walks near the site of a stabbing in Quebec City yesterday.

The attack is the most deadly incident in the city since the Quebec City mosque shooting left six dead and 19 injured in 2017. "I do not have the words to describe such a tragedy". He said the investigation is ongoing.

"Quebec is waking up after a night of horror".
