The UK has purchased 40 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine, which targets to inoculate 20 million people through its two-dose regimen.
The Trump administration insisted late Monday that between those two vaccines and others in the pipeline, the USA will be able to accommodate any American who wants to be vaccinated by the end of the second quarter of 2021.
In November, AstraZeneca and Oxford University released preliminary results from late-stage trials that showed that their vaccine candidate was about 70% effective in protecting against COVID-19. Of the three candidates, AstraZeneca is the only one to have already struck a deal with COVAX, a global initiative to distribute COVID-19 vaccines equitably, including to low-income nations, according to data from the Duke Global Health Innovation Center. Then they'll meet next week to talk about Moderna's vaccine.
The first doses of the vaccine are set to be administered on Tuesday, with the National Health Service giving top priority to care home residents, health and care staff, the elderly and vulnerable people.
Trump also plans to sign an executive order created to ensure that all Americans have access to vaccines before the US government begins aiding other nations with their inoculation efforts.
The vaccine, developed by Pfizer/BioNTech, has been distributed across the whole of the UK.
Senior administration officials provided details on the summit on Monday. "We are planning for both cases". The FDA is not required to follow the panel's advice, though it usually does.
Possible US attack on Iran considered a 'bad idea'
Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the "father" of Iran's nuclear program, the question on everyone's mind was the identity of the perpetrator. The weapon used to assassinate Iranian nuclear physicist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was remotely controlled from a satellite, Brig.
COVAX has placed an order for 300 million doses from AstraZeneca.
FDA officials are expected to appear at the meeting, and it would be inappropriate for the drugmaker to attend while its application for authorization is pending with the agency, the person familiar with Moderna's plans said. The Pfizer vaccine must be transported at super-cooled temperatures, and comes in batches of 975 doses. But Trudeau said up to 249,000 doses of the vaccine Pfizer is producing with German partner BionNTech SE would arrive this month, and a further three million doses should be delivered at the start of 2021.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: "We will look back on today, V-Day, as a key moment in our fight back against this awful disease, and I am proud our health services across the United Kingdom are about to embark on our largest ever vaccination programme".
While Ontario is expected to receive about 100,000 of those initial doses, it remains unclear whether it will be able to use them to vaccinate long-term care home residents at first.
"The priority is to make sure we distribute these vaccines to Americans before we start shipping them around the world to get worldwide access", the official said.
Fifty hospitals are initially taking part in the vaccination campaign and have started booking over-80s for shots and working with care-home providers to book their employees into vaccination clinics.
