Nurse assistant Kisa Kniola, left, gives a Covid-19 vaccination to Lindsay Kreighbaum at Franciscan Health in Michigan City, Indiana.
The vaccinations were administered following a breaking report from top officials at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that the agency is "rapidly working" to approve Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine.
The Financial Times reported that the US FDA had made a decision to approve Moderna's vaccine candidate on an emergency basis.
Both vaccines come with warnings for people who have histories of allergic reactions to their ingredients to avoid having them. Moderna will continue to gather additional data and plans to file a Biologics License Application (BLA) with the FDA requesting full licensure in 2021, it said. However, it has advised to receive the complete schedule of COVID-19 vaccine for protecting one-self against this disease. To try to help instil confidence, Vice-President Mike Pence received the Pfizer-BioNTech shot on live TV Friday, along with Surgeon General Jerome Adams. Getting vaccinated for Covid-19 will be voluntary, the ministry said, adding the vaccine introduced in India will be as effective as any developed by other countries.
It's just the beginning of "what we hope will be a big push to get this awful virus behind us, although it will take many more months to get to all Americans", Dr Collins said.
Rest in Peace, Jeremy Bulloch, the Original Boba Fett
Star Wars actor James Bulloch, who played Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi , has passed away at 75. According to TMZ , he lived in London after retiring from acting and is survived by his wife Maureen and their three sons.
European regulators could authorise its use as soon as January 6.
The biotech company has worked with the US government to prepare for the distribution of 5.9 million shots as early as this weekend.
The Oxford vaccine can be stored in normal refrigerators but like the Pfizer vaccine, it also requires two doses with a three-week gap between the two doses for the Pfizer jabs and a four-week gap for the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine.
The vaccine must be transported to hospitals and other centres before injections begin. That was a record, Kizzmekia Corbett, the scientific lead for the coronavirus program at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases' Vaccine Research Center, said at the time. Experts are hoping the two vaccines together will "break the back of the pandemic" when combined with masks and other precautions, said Dr. Arnold Monto of the University of MI, who chaired an advisory committee that publicly debated the shots' evidence ahead of FDA's decisions. The adverse reaction in the person, minutes after taking the Pfizer shot, was similar to two cases reported last week in Britain. More than 16,000 people are in the hospital with COVID-19 symptoms across the state.
In the United States, where a one-day high of 3,580 deaths was reported on Wednesday alone, emergency approval of the Moderna vaccine would pave the way for six million doses to potentially start shipping as soon as this weekend.
