The notion that the virus might have escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which conducts coronavirus research, has gotten renewed attention since the World Health Organization mission to China struggled to uncover information that significantly advanced the natural spillover hypothesis.
But a year later and things are changing, and Facebook will no longer take down posts claiming that Covid-19 was man-made or manufactured.
This resulted in US President Joe Biden this week ordering US intelligence agencies to launch a probe into whether Coronavirus leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology - a lab the US has previously raised safety concerns about several years before.
He said "the motive and purpose" of USA calls for investigation "relying on its intelligence apparatus is crystal clear" and alleged its intelligence agencies had "a notorious track record".
President Biden on Wednesday ordered US intelligence agencies to report to him in the next three months on whether the Covid-19 virus first emerged in China from an animal source or from a laboratory accident.
A World Health Organization report earlier this year said the most likely origin scenario was that the virus spread to humans from bats through an unspecified intermediary animal.
Among them, a few possibilities, such as the theory which said that the virus originated in nature, have received more traction than others.
In a letter in Science last week, a mix of virologists, epidemiologists and other scientists also called for further investigation, writing: "Theories of accidental release from a lab and zoonotic spillover both remain viable".
New grand jury seated for Trump investigation
Vence's research seems to have focused on Trump's longtime chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg in recent weeks. James, a Democrat, said her office also is continuing its civil investigation into Trump.
"As of today, the U.S. Intelligence Community has "coalesced around two likely scenarios" but has not reached a definitive conclusion on this question", Biden said in the statement.
Citing a U.S. intelligence report, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that a trio from the Wuhan Institute of Virology were hospitalised with a seasonal illness in November 2019, a month before Beijing disclosed the existence of a mysterious pneumonia outbreak.
In December 2020, the BBC sent a team of reporters to the site to investigate, but were forced to turn around at a checkpoint on a remote dirt road, and trailed by plainclothes police.
Facebook will no longer remove posts claiming the coronavirus is "man-made", it said Wednesday. He also warned that uncertainty may persist, noting that the origin of the 2014 Ebola outbreak still isn't fully understood. Former US president Donald Trump was among those who supported the theory that the virus might have escaped from a bio lab in China. "If we are blind as to its origins, then we are blind as to how to prevent it again the future", Sen.
On Wednesday President Biden said the intelligence agents were divided on the two possible scenarios: laboratory leak or natural transfer in the wild.
But top United States trade negotiator Katherine Tai has said she is analysing whether the terms of that pact have been met by China, with some experts saying Beijing is falling up to 40 percent short on its agreement to buy U.S. goods. By subscribing, you can help us get the story right.
