His proposal came two days after the Philippines recorded two cases of the B.1.617.2 variant on two Filipino seafarers who arrived from Oman and UAE.
The government is working closely with local authorities and PHE to deploy additional measures across London to help control the spread of COVID-19 variants and break chains of transmission quickly.
On Tuesday, a World Health Organization report said the variant had "increased transmissibility" and had been found in 44 countries, and therefore described it as a "variant of global concern".
The Philippines has also previously recorded cases of a variant first detected in Britain and another first discovered in South Africa, as well as a homegrown P.3 variant.
The Imperial College London led Real-time Assessment of Community Transmission (REACT-1) study comes as it emerged that the government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) is due to hold a review meeting on Thursday to discuss the Variant of Concern (VOC) first identified in India, which UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson told Parliament was of "increasing concern" as it may be "considerably more transmissible" than the dominant variant in the UK first detected in the county of Kent previous year.
But the figures come amid a warning from Boris Johnson that new variants "pose a potentially lethal danger". The UN health body urged all to refer to the variants by their scientific names. "The government guidelines said the report should read positive, it doesn't matter how critical the person is, nobody cared".
The WHO insisted though that it was far too early to interpret this to mean that the variant might have more resistance to vaccine protections.
'GLOBAL CONCERN': Highly-infectious Covid variant prompts World Health Organization warning
Swaminathan said, "In fact, people should go ahead and get whatever vaccine is available to them". Inoculation at district hospital in New Delhi, India , on April 22, 2021.
The highest numbers of new deaths were reported from India (26,820 new deaths; 1.9 new deaths per 100.000; a 15% increase), Indonesia (1190 new deaths; 0.4 new deaths per 100,000; a 3% increase), and Bangladesh (368 new deaths; 0.2 new deaths per 100,000; a 34% decrease).
The variant has already spread to other countries, and many nations have moved to cut or restrict movements from India.
A mutation means a change in a nucleic acid base or amino acid molecule, and a virus containing this change is termed a mutant.
It is understood that work is still ongoing to understand the extent of transmission and if the cases have been contained.
"This is important, what we do, even though there is increased transferability demonstrated by some preliminary study, we need much more information on this variant".
The Indian variant of coronavirus has been blamed for an increase in cases in England.
Scientists from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) are holding a meeting on Thursday to assess the threat of the Indian variant, amid upcoming data that is expected to show that United Kingdom cases linked to the variant have tripled over the past week. India's total tally of Covid-19 cases now stands at 2,37,03,665 with 37,10,525 active cases and 2,58,317 deaths so far.
The update said that approximately 0.1% of positive samples in India have been sequenced and uploaded to GISAID to identify SARS-CoV-2 variants.
