According to the release, the first two cases of the new coronavirus variant in Canada were announced on Saturday by Dr Barbara Yaffe, Ontario's Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health.
The two cases are a couple from Durham with no known travel history, exposure or high-risk contacts.
Ontario reported 4,301 new cases over the past two days on Saturday, with the province seeing more than 2,000 cases per day for 12 consecutive days.
However, there is no evidence to suggest that the Health Canada-approved vaccines will be less effective against the new variant.
"We will continue to do everything we can to keep people and communities safe and may consider further action to reduce non-essential travel as the situation evolves", said a ministry spokesperson in an emailed statement to CTV News Vancouver.

He warned that within days the number of daily positive cases recorded in SA will surpass that of the peak during the first wave. Since then, more than 50 countries, including India, have imposed travel restrictions on the UK.
Public Health Agency of Canada's (PHAC) National Microbiology Laboratory, which monitors Canadian COVID-19 cases, expects more cases of this and other variants maybe be found in the country.
On Monday, December 21, the federal government restricted travel from the United Kingdom for 72 hours in an effort to keep the contagious new strain out of Canada.
As of Saturday, Canada has had almost 541,000 COVID-19 cases, with more than 14,700 fatalities due to the virus, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
"Recognizing the potential increased risk that inbound global travelers may pose with this new variant, the province continues to call on the federal government to urgently partner with Ontario to implement testing at Toronto Pearson worldwide Airport", the province said in a statement.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has since imposed a lockdown on London and most of southeast England in a bid to cut off the capital and surrounding area from the rest of the country.
