Gaetz has denied any allegations of wrongdoing and claimed that he was the target of an extortion attempt folllowing a Tuesday New York Times report that said Gaetz is now the subject of a federal sex trafficking investigation involving a then-17-year-old girl.
The investigation, first reported by The New York Times on Wednesday, is said to be looking into whether Gaetz had a relationship with a 17-year-old, and whether or not he paid for her travel, which may violate federal sex trafficking laws.
Gaetz said the allegations were part of an extortion plot by a former Justice Department official, whom he identified as David McGee.
The sources said the Gaetz inquiry is a sideline to an investigation into one of Gaetz's political allies, Joel Greenberg, who resigned as Seminole County tax collector following his indictment last summer on charges including sex trafficking.
Carlson quickly denied any recollection of the dinner with Gaetz: "I don't remember the woman you are speaking of or the context at all, honestly". "And she was actually threatened by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, told that if she wouldn't cop to the fact that somehow I was involved in some pay-for-play scheme, that she could face trouble".
He denied that he ever had a relationship with any underage girls and said the allegations against him were "as searing as they are false".
"Our family was so troubled by that we went to the local Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice were so concerned about this attempted extortion of a member of Congress that they asked my dad to wear a wire, which he did with the former Department of Justice official", Gaetz told Carlson.
"No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets of the ongoing extortion investigation", he said. McGee denied those claims to The Post, saying he had no connection to the agency's probe into possible sex trafficking by Gaetz.
Police Investigating Subway Beating That Left Asian Man Unconscious
The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force has shared the video on social media in hopes to get information that could lead to an arrest. NY accounted for the largest surge from three in 2019 to 28 in 2020, a 833 percent increase in anti-Asian hate crimes.
But without a doubt, the weirdest interview Gaetz has given was to Fox News' Tucker Carlson. "No one with any level of authority has had conversations with Matt Gaetz for any of our platforms, and we have no interest in hiring him", a Fox News media spokesperson told Salon. Which, as you saw, he did.
Gertz is often misidentified and flooded with tweets when Gaetz makes news, to the point that he has added a line to his Twitter bio clarifying he's "Definitely not the GOP congressman".
Gaetz accused McGee live on Carlson's show of trying to extort millions of dollars out of him and his family in exchange for "making disgusting sex trafficking allegations against me go away".
"Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name".
"I only know what I've read about in the New York Times", he claims, before putting Carlson into the dragnet.
Gaetz has not been charged with a crime.
'You know, I've paid for flights, for hotel rooms.
In late 2017, Gaetz was the only member of Congress to vote against a bill meant to use the Department of Transportation to assist in combating human trafficking, arguing against the expansion of the role of the federal government. I do believe there are people at the Department of Justice who are trying to smear me.
