The exact circumstances of the officer's death are not yet clear.
The law enforcement officials told the AP that the suspect was shot and was being taken to the hospital in critical condition. They also confirmed this does not appear to be terrorism, but they are still investigating. Authorities installed a tall perimeter fence around the Capitol and for months restricted traffic along the roads closest to the building, but they have begun pulling back some of the emergency measures in recent weeks.
The crash and shooting happened as Congress is on recess.
US President Joe Biden has also sent his condolences to the family of the slain officer.
