The FBI's Washington, D.C., field office said it had "responded to an incident at the U.S. Capitol" and is providing support to Capitol Police.
The law enforcement officials told the AP that the driver then got out of the vehicle with what appeared to be a knife.
The officials spoke to AP were not authorised to publicly discuss the pending investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Shortly after 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT) the Capitol Police alert system sent an email to lawmakers and their staff ordering them to stay away from exterior windows and doors.
The attack occurred about 91 metres from the entrance of the building on the Senate side of the Capitol.
The attack came as psyches remained scarred and security tight after the January assault on Congress by hundreds of supporters of then-President Donald Trump.
In recent weeks some security around the complex has been loosened, with the number of armed National Guard troops at the Capitol reduced and a security fence that created a broad perimeter around the Capitol complex removed.
Law enforcement officials identified the slain suspect as 25-year-old Noah Green.
"It does not appear to be terrorism-related, but obviously we will continue to investigate", said Mr Contee.
There was no immediate connection apparent between January 6 and Friday's crash.

They were called upon soon afterward to secure the Capitol during Biden's inauguration and faced another potential threat in early March linked to conspiracy theories falsely claiming Trump would retake the presidency.
The U.S. Capitol was placed under lockdown amid what Capitol Police described as "an external security threat".
President Biden had just departed the White House for Camp David when the incident occurred.
Video posted online showed a dark-coloured sedan crashed against a vehicle barrier and a police K9 inspecting the vehicle.
But CBS News reported that security officials had already warned congressional staffers of a threat before the vehicle ramming.
