Residents in the nearby communities of Darien and Burr Ridge, about 20 miles southwest of Chicago, were urged to take cover about 11:15 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service in Chicago said on Twitter.
More than 1 million people were under a tornado warning late Sunday night as an intense line of storms ripped through the Chicago area.
Naperville city spokeswoman Linda LaCloche says at least five people, including a woman who was listed in critical condition, were hospitalized in Naperville, where 16 homes were left "uninhabitable" after the late Sunday storm.
Meteorologists will survey the scene Monday to assess the damage and determine the strength of the tornado, as well as to confirm whether a single or multiple tornadoes were responsible.
Calling it a "life-threatening situation", the National Weather Service said on Sunday night that a "confirmed large and extremely unsafe tornado" landed near Woodridge, damaging some communities. She said several gas leaks were reported in Naperville and the crew made a door-to-door canvassing to shut down the line.
COVID-19: 373 new cases reported today
That's still almost double the province's pre-pandemic ICU capacity of 72 patients, the spokesperson said. There are now 273 Manitobans hospitalized with COVID-19 in Manitoba and neighbouring provinces.
Initial reports indicate four people were transported with noncritical injuries to Edward Hospital. "I'm sitting in the dark waiting to hear back about what's going on and gathering reports", Gina Cunningham, the mayor of Woodridge, said early Monday morning, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Storm damage was also reported in Plainfield.
The threat of wind damage lasted for hours as the storm line moved across northern IL to northwestern IN, forecasters said. The injuries reportedly weren't life-threatening.
"The severe threat has diminished/ended for most of the Chicago metro area".
